 Stepping Stones

Why to study in UK?
The UK has become one of the top destinations to study around the world.
With traditions of excellence dating back hundreds of years, high class institutions in every corner and much more flexibility than many other countries, the United Kingdom has much to offer international students that other English-speaking countries cannot offer.

Hundreds of thousands of international student’s studies in the UK each year, making studying in the UK the number two choice for international students in the world, second only to the USA. Also, why to choose UK as because of:

Growing Destination:- International students have always been an important presence in the UK, and their numbers have been growing steadily over the years. There are many countries like USA, China, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Germany and France etc from where students are relocating to UK for their higher education.

Worldwide Destination:- Degrees and qualifications from UK higher education institutions are known around the world as high quality and world class. This standard of excellence is set by some of the older universities with recognizable names, such as Oxford and Cambridge, but the tradition carries through too many of the universities and colleges throughout the UK.

Education cost are lower:- The cost of education for an international student in the UK can be and is generally lower compared to the USA and other countries. Programs in the USA can be $25,000 or more a year in tuition alone. Tuition for the majority of UK higher education institutions generally £6,000 to £7,000 a year - considerably less!
Because your degree will generally take less time to complete in the UK than in other countries, this will also save you money. Although four-year programs are increasing in popularity, most degree programs in the UK are three years, and a master’s program is typically between one and two years.

Gateway to Europe:- From the UK, you can reach out to most areas of Europe within a few hours by train or direct flight.
Multicultural Nation:- The UK is known for its multicultural society, with all religions and faiths represented in some way. With a racial, ethnic and religious jumble, the UK is very open to new traditions and cultures - something that is a great thing for students from other countries.

UK Academic Programs and Universities:
UK Universities have a comparative advantage in the following areas of study.
There are three main levels of Higher Education course:

Postgraduate courses leading to higher degrees, diplomas and certificates (including Doctorate, Masters (research and taught), Postgraduate diplomas and certificates as well as postgraduate certificates of education (PGCE) and professional qualifications) which usually require a first degree as entry qualification.

Undergraduate courses which include first degrees (honours and ordinary), first degrees with qualified teacher status, enhanced first degrees, first degrees obtained concurrently with a diploma, and intercalated first degrees (where first degree students, usually in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, interrupt their studies to complete a one-year course of advanced studies in a related topic).
Other undergraduate courses which include all other higher education courses, for example SVQ or NVQ: Level 5, Diploma (HNC/D level for diploma and degree holders), HND (or equivalent), HNC (or equivalent) and SVQ or NVQ: Level 4 and Diplomas in HE.

Education and Living Cost for studying in the UK.
Education Cost: -
The cost of tuition in the UK will vary depending on a great many number of factors. Things such as the location of the school, the type of course you plan to attend, the length of the course, etc... will all have a bearing on how much it will cost at the end of the day.
These below are all approx. numbers as this tuition fee structure may vary as per the course and degree programs.

ESL Programs
English as a second language course will generally in the region of £100 to £200 per week - but this can rise up to £1,000 per week if you include things like meals, accommodation, etc... that some schools will arrange for you.

Undergraduate Degree
University fees for international students vary in the same way that ESL program fees vary. It is dependent on the course, the location of the university, etc... As a guideline you can expect to pay between £6,000 and £9,000/ year for courses. If your course is specialized, such as a clinical program for doctors, this can be as much as £18,000 per year. You will have to factor in that most university degrees last for 3 years, and 4-year sandwich programs are becoming a lot more popular.

Post-Graduate Degree
As a post-graduate student, the course length will generally be shorter, and class sizes will be much smaller. For this reason, fees will be higher ranging up to £10,000 for a course. If you are taking an MBA program, competition may firstly be fierce, and the cost could be in the region of £10,000 to £16,000 or more per year.

Living Cost:-
As always, costs can vary depending on what part of the country you are planning to study. This includes accommodation costs and other living expense.

Student Accommodation:
If you are planning to come to the UK for University then you will most probably take the Halls of Residence option and these normally start from about £50/week, moving up to around £80/week for some larger universities. Some will have catering facilities such as a canteen, but others will just have a kitchen so you can cook your own food.

If you opt to not go the halls of residence option, you can always go and find your own accommodation and recommendation is to have group to share the accommodation where the money can be spilt in to those numbers accordingly. Rents can range from anything from £35/week upwards depending on the standard of accommodation.

Overall Living Expenses:
These below are the rough numbers that is been stated to give you a general idea of living expenses for the international students:

University of Liverpool - £5,500 to £7,000 per year
Essex University - £5,700 to £7,500 per year
University of Manchester - £8,100 per year
Oxford University – £9,750 per year
University of London – approximately £210 per week

Study Visa:- Types, Process and Admission Procedure in UK
One of the most important issues you need to check is whether you need a visa to enter the UK. This very much depends on your country of origin. Generally, there is a distinction to be made between EEA/Swiss nationals and international students.

EEA and Swiss Nationals
If you are an EEA/Swiss national you usually have the right to enter and stay in the UK without a visa, no specific permission is needed to study here. You do not have to register or apply for any particular documents either. If you’re an EEA/Swiss national, you have the right to move freely and to take residence in the UK for up to three months.
EEA countries include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Non-EEA-Students

If you’re a student whose country of origin does not belong to the EEA group, you will have to apply for a visa. This mainly applies for students from Asia, Africa, Australia, and the USA. If you’ve been accepted by the UK higher education institution, you can choose between two different types of student visa: Student visitor status and a Tier 4 visa.

For courses that do not exceed a total length of six months, you will be eligible for student visitor status. If you should attend an English language course, this period extends to a maximum of 11 months. However, the student visitor status has certain restrictions. Most importantly, you won’t be allowed to take up employment in any form; even if it is unpaid or part of your programme. Moreover, you cannot apply for an extended stay after you’ve completed your course, once you reach the end of your study you are expected to leave the UK.

Most foreign students thus apply for a Tier-4 student visa. You want to do this prior to your arrival at the UK. If you enter the UK with a Tier 4 visa, you will have to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover both your course fees and living costs (i.e. accommodation and food). You also need to make sure that the institution of your choice has the permission to accept international students with a Tier 4 visa. Depending on your degree and personal plans, you can apply for an extended stay in the UK after completion of your course, in order to gather some practical experience in the private sector or to open a business.

Study Visa Process and Admission Procedure: -
Applications to all undergraduate courses are filled through Universities and Colleges Admission System or UCAS - a central organization in the UK that is responsible for receiving undergraduate applications and forwarding them to the respective institutions.

UCAS allows you to apply to five Universities through a common form. £13 is the fees for one course or £23 for multiple courses and applications. The services offered by UCAS are designed for the admission to the September/October intake in the UK and you normally apply directly to a university for courses starting in January or February.

Note:- Students seeking admission to a postgraduate taught program will have to apply to individual universities using the application form of that particular university. Most universities offer the facility to apply online for a nominal fee. Once the application form is filled appropriate supporting documents would have to be sent to the university. Although universities do not have a deadline it is recommended that you apply early to enhance your chances of being made an offer.

The following documents need to be submitted for the application of the course and in the University:
Attested copies of mark sheets of class X, XII, and the Bachelor's degree (if applicable)
At least, two academic reference letters from professors who have taught you most recently;
If you have work experience then two letters of recommendation from the employer/manager who knows you well and can comment on your professional abilities;
Statement of Purpose (SOP);
Resume;
Photocopied score reports of GMAT / IELTS / TOEFL;
Portfolio (in case of students applying for art and design courses & architecture programs);
Others (certificates/achievements at the state and national level and extracurricular activities);
Proof of funds
After filling the online application form, you would need a letter of Acceptance from the University on the course.
